Yoshio is one of my favorite models. He has a really great face and clever costumes. I was a little tired today and didn't feel like drawing... but I decided to just relax and not worry too much about how it would turn out. I was completely surprised by the results! It totally perked up my mood.
This is a sketch for a two page spread in a book my class is making. The story is Little Red Riding Hood. On my page the woodsman hears the wolf snoring in Grandmas house and decides to investigate.
The composition is intended to direct your eye down the tree, up the rifle, to the eyes, and back to the house. Most importantly I wanted to make a visual connection between the woodsman and the house.
The difficulty with this body type is that all of my usual reference points (usually skeletal) are hidden. I had to try to recreate her profile shapes because her internal structure was more difficult to identify. She was a fun challenge.
This model was a lot of fun to draw... She had a lot of good shapes. I'm always glad to get a chance to draw from different body types... and she had a really great hairdo.
This is a concept sketch for a cover for the book "Ivy and Bean". I was fortunate enough to have an Art director from Chronicle Books critique this sketch. I got a pretty good response. Although she felt the worms might be a hard sell for the marketing department. I put more effort into the composition and characters design on this project than anything I’ve done so far. I wish I was able to present a finished painting but I'm happy that my efforts produce a pretty good design.
I'm really happy with the way this drawing turned out. We had a very lovely model who was fun and easy to work with. I just loved this pose. Everything just came together. I really feel like I captured her softness and avoided making her look too old.
