She's back

(click to view image with flickr)

(conté crayon on paper) original size 18"x24"

The same model came in today so we had her take the same pose as last time. I used the extra 40 minutes to fix up the image a little. It still has it's good parts and bad parts but I think it's something... you know... it's not nothing.

(click to view image with flickr)

(watercolor, ink, & pencil on paper) original size 13-1/3"x10"

Here is the finished painting for the poem Ozymandias. Check out my class's blog to see how my classmates solved this problem. This image was intended to be displayed online at 400 x 300.

(conté crayon on paper) original size 18"x24"

I'm pretty happy with the line quality in this image... I didn't realize it when I was drawing it but now that I step back, her pose reminds me of those old 1950s "pin-up" girls.

(click to view image with flickr)

(#2 pencil on paper) original size 9"x12"

Just some hand studies. I want to do at least 50 of these by the end of the semester. I know I've been posting a lot of figure work lately. I promise I am working on more interesting Illustration stuff. They just take a little longer to complete and post. Expect them soon.

40 min nude (sitting)

(click to view image with flickr)

(conté crayon on paper) original size 18"x24"

I tried to be a little more expressionistic with my lines in this one. I like the results.

Terry Re-worked

(click to view image with flickr)

(conté crayon on paper) original size 18"x24"

I was trying a new technique today... It seems that if you smudge the brown color I've been using it looks much more red... Anyway here is the drawing from Tuesday reworked a little... He kinda looks a little sunburned...

60 min Dude... um... Nude

(click to view image with flickr)

(conté crayon on paper) original size 18"x24"

Terry was a great model. He had a great face and very defined muscles. I like some areas of this image more than others... but I think there are some good things happening. I might get a chance to work on this pose again in a couple days. I'll repost it if I make any improvements.

(click to view image with flickr)

(conté crayon on paper) original size 9"x12"

I got all liniar up in his grill with this one. I wanted to really explore those face lines. I had a lot of fun with this one.

20 min Head Study

(conté crayon on paper) original size 9"x12"

This guy had a great face... I really enjoyed drawing him. I think older men's faces work well with my drawing style because they have such great character lines. I'm pretty happy with the way this came out.

Ozymandias (Sketch)

(click to view image with flickr)

(ink on paper) original size 10"x13-3/8"

This is a sketch for an illustration meant to accompany a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. The idea was to link the Poem with events surrounding Hurricane Katrina. I'm not happy with the composition so I'm going to rearrange it before I do the final painting.

20 min nude

(click to view image with flickr)

(conté crayon on paper) original size 18"x24"

This model was really interesting. She always took these kind of contorted poses and at one point she spontaneously started singing this lovely melody. She was singing when I made this drawing. It was the best one I did all day!

We were all wondering to what depths he could sink...
Well... he's in deep now.
Right up to his neck.

P.S. Just for fun, do a google search for the word "failure" :-D

(Graphite on paper) original size 8.5"x12"

It's been interesting working small in a sketchbook. It changes the way you move and make marks.

I'm really glad to be working from the model again. There is just nothing like drawing from life.
