kc!'s comments inspired me to add a little more depth to the homepage. Let me know what you think of the new background. As always, comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated. I have even more features I'd like to add to the homepage... I just can't stop picking at this thing! I'll leave it up you y'all to tell me when I've gone too far. Thanks again for your help.

Metamorphosis...II...also...again

click image to view at full size
(pencil and paper)

This is the second half of the project. This time Christine drew the portrait and I drew the transformation. The first two images are by Christine and the other two by me. Why a goat you ask... I don't know... I guess sometimes I just feel like a consumer.

Metamorphosis

(pencil and paper)

For this project I teamed up with my beautiful friend Christine... and turned her into a bug... Actually the bug was her idea. I drew a portrait of her first then she drew the thing that she would morph into. Then we both drew an in-between image. Images 1 and 2 are mine and she did the last two. It's hard to draw people that you care about. Especially when they are sitting right there. You can easily get bogged down trying to fit all of the feeling you have for that person in your portrait. Anyway this one was fun because I didn't have a lot of time to worry about it and besides... she ended up a bug in the end anyway... so how bad could my portrait be in comparison?

more updates to the homepage

paris.raupach.com

So ok... I'm already behind on the daily drawings, but I did add some shadows to the flying papers on the homepage. It took a ridiculous amount of math to get the shadows to line up with the papers... most likely do to my poor coding skills... but... what do you want... I learn as I go.
If you look closely you might notice the refresh feature I added that redirects those without the flash player to an alternate homepage. As always any design comments are appreciated.

It's Paris!...see...paris...cus my name is paris...too..eh...

(ink and watercolor)

This is a playbill design for Romeo and Juliet. The title would be in the black space at the top of the image.
I had to choose a secondary character to focus on for the cover. The character of Paris was betrothed to Juliet at the beginning of the play and then confronted and killed by Romeo in Juliet's tomb at the end... and well... doesn't really show up much in between. Anyway, I thought it would be funny to do him as a self-portrait... you know cus... that's my name too... Ok... I'm a big dork. I was originally to do a different character and use phil as my model, thinking, "hey he's an actor he must have access to costumes and stuff", but alas, it didn't work out... so here you go... another self portrait... see but it's funny...cus ... it's Paris...
P.S. I am so in love with watercolors. I learned the secret to skin tone... Green... pea soup green... trust me.

GREED!

click image to view at full size
(acrylic on canvas board)

This was a big project, from concept to costume to lighting and photographing to final painting. I was trying out a new technique with acrylics. I started with a complete value drawing with brown Col-erase pencil. The shadow areas are applied first with thin glazes, and then highlights with dry brush. I used some flo-aid for the glazes and really liked the control it gave me. This is the first time I've really felt like I was working with the acrylics rather than against them.
Plus, the concept was pretty fun. To represent one of the seven deadly sins, I thought it would be fun to contrast the religion that defined the sin with the sin itself. The Catholic Church was a great subject for this piece because the institution has a built in dichotomy. On one hand you have the extreme decadence and wealth of the Vatican, and on the other you have nuns serving the poorest people in the world.

Baking utensils bug

click image to view at full size
(found objects, sculpey, and acrylic)

I was inspired to build this bug by this book "Living Jewels: The Natural Design of Beetles" by Poul Beckmann, Ruth Kaspin It's made from a jello mold, serving spoon, bic pen caps, Sculpey, and "interference green" acrylic paint.

Hey everybody. I've posted a new flash intro page. Please take a look at it and give me any feedback. I'm interested to know how it looks from other computers. Any advise or observations would be great. Including comments on load time, design, features, or anything else you would like to say.

Unfortunately this is the last painting from my painting class before I had to withdraw. I really liked this instructor and look forward to taking a class from him again.

Ahhh... the elixir of life

(watercolor & ink)

For this mug design, I wanted to focus the complex machinery you find in coffee shop, and contrast them with the warm fuzzy feeling you get from a good cup o' jo. I was surprised by the reaction I got from this piece. Everyone seems to think it is a real complete image. Sometimes everything in a painting comes together just right...

Quick Acrylic Apple

click image to view at full size
(acrylic on canvas paper)

This was just a quick acrylic painting of an apple. Just playing around with the paint. I still want to practice more with this medium... A lot of illustrators like it because is dries fast... I still find it a little difficult to work with... it just doesn't flow like oils or watercolor. I'm going to try working with the different additives to see if I can get it to act a little more like these other paints.

Inflatephant

click image to view at full size
(garbage bags and duct tape)

The assignment for my sculpture class was to make an inflatable sculpture that represented "something heavy". So I chose... AN ELEPHANT! I spent a couple weeks working on designs in my head, but this class wasn't my top priority. Honestly, I wouldn't have been able to complete this project if one of my other classes hadn't been cancelled on the day it was due. I only had some large garbage bags, duct tape, and three hours to work on it. I can't believe it held air!

Best damn paper bag I ever painted

click image to view at full size
(oil paint on canvas)

So yeah... the subject is a little ordinary... But this was the first oil painting I've ever made and I have to say I'm very happy with the results. It took about 16 to 20 hours over 4 weeks. My painting instructor was excellent! I haven't figured out how to get a better photograph, the paint is a little glossy. You'll just have to trust me when I say that the original is incredibly bag-like.

Fishing for voters

click image to view at full size
(scratchboard)

Well... I wish the final product came out as well as the practice run... I tried to get a little too fancy with the scratchboard... looking back I wouldn't use the gray wash of ink. Rather I think I did better when I used the high contrast inherent in the medium. I think my first Kerry caricature was better.

This was my first time using scratchboard and my first attempt at drawing John Kerry. I'm pretty happy with the results... it's not bad for a practice run.

Stump Speach

click image to view at full size
(wood, clay, oil paint, & clear vinyl)

Yep it's a sculpture. I was hoping an intro to sculpture class would help me learn to make models for lighting. Some illustrators will build and light an entire scene for reference. Any the assignment was to make a sculpture using wood. I got a slice off a round of pine from a chainsaw sculptor in town. I wanted to have a face coming out of the wood and being suffocated by plastic. Not bad for a non-sculptor eh...

Busted

click image to view at full size
(watercolor on paper)

This was a fun one... It is a depiction of a scene from a classic fairytale. I was allowed to rewrite the story in anyway I like. I hope that the story is told well enough to recognize without me telling you the details... I mean... that is what illustration is about after all.

Jen was kind enough to pose for me so I could get the lighting right... I feel like the background needs to be darker. I may re-post this after I work on it a little more.

PUMA

click image to view at full size
(ink & watercolor on paper)

First off, sorry for the long break. The server my site lived on ate itself and I didn't have time to rebuild the page while I was in school. Anyway I'll be posting up all the stuff I've been working on this semester (all the interesting ones anyway) over the next couple of days.

The assignment was to make an ad for puma shoes including a person in action. I was inspired by a great new game show Jen discovered called "Dance 360". If you haven't seen it... you should... it's great... amateur dancers compete for $360, an Xbox, and some other random prize.

I'm pretty pleased with the way the forward shoe came out. I managed to find some good reference. I wish the background were a little smoother. Acrylics might have been a better medium but I'm dying to practice more with watercolor.
