The right tool for the right guy

So I started a new job. I'm working at a little frame shop in Berkeley. There are lots of tape measures that have different markings on them so that each employee can claim one and identify it later. Well I didn't like the little smiley face some previous employee had painted on mine so I decided to give it a mark that would indicate, without a doubt, who it belonged to.

Happy Father's Day!

(marine paint on concrete)

Ok so this post is a little late... but I started a new job and this week was both my first week at the new job and my last week at the old job. Anyhow... This was my dad's father's day present. We found out he wanted this concrete seagull from this little shop in a town about an hour away. We drove all the way out there and found it but it was painted plain white... very boring... So I bought some special marine (weatherproof) paint from the shop and spruced it up a bit... I found some pics of seagulls online for reference. (It’s surprising how many different types of seagulls there are.) It was a lot of fun and I felt like it was a little more personal gift by the time I was done.

Vern in goggles.

This is my friend Vern. She was visiting from Germany for a couple weeks. I caught this snapshot in the airport while she was trying on my goggles. I've been thinking about making a comic based on my friends for a while now. Now that I have a better understanding of faces I thought I'd use a fun pic like this to start practicing. We'll miss you Vern! Come back soon!

*My little brother Phil just sent me this article. It makes and interesting observation about graphics that are too realistic. Apparently there is a point when an image gets so close the real thing that all the viewer can focus on are the differences. Often it is easier to relate to a more simplistic representation. I think I will try to keep that in mind when drawing caricatures.

Why yes... that is a rubber ducky wearing headphones.

Why...? Um... Well we just got new rubber ducky shower curtains and I've been thinking about what makes things cute... So I thought I would try to draw something cute... and honestly... what is cuter than a DJ ducky?

"Who's going to drop it? Will you...? Or will he...?"

This is two page-spread illustration I made for my favorite Dr. Seuss book, "The Butter Battle Book". I wanted to describe the subtext of the story with a more aggressive style than Seuss is known for. I really had a lot of fun with this piece. I spent a lot of time working out the composition, color, and lighting. I really wanted a lot of tension and intensity between the two characters. I think the brightness that you can get from watercolor really works well for this image. Do yourself a favor and read this book... it is great! Then give it to a kid and have them read it.

Yikes! This self-portrait came out a little zombie-like... oh well I can't be pretty all the time. I had a mirror held at about waste level to get the weird angle on my face. It was fun but turned out a little creepy.
