I was down on forth-street sketching people and I found this guy playing the banjo. He was really good. Here is a little sample of his playing. I kept the final watercolor quick and light... I think it came out pretty well.
We had this model in my painting class for two days... I painted the body really fast and I like the way it came out... I think I over worked the face though... it lost the nice loose quality of the rest of the painting. I need to practice not taking the face so seriously... I get all caught up in the details.
So here is the "final" Painting from the sketches I posted earlier. The truth is that I could have used more time to work on it. Unfortunately we will have a different model next week. I think I'll just consider this one done for now. I know posts have been a little sparse lately, but I'm working on some big projects including a Flash redesign of my homepage! (click here for a sneak preview... the icons are rough but you can get an idea on some of the interactivity.) Also I SOLD MY FIRST PAINTING! Well... sort of... Ernie traded me his game cube for one of my self portraits. That's kind of like selling it! I guess he is going to miss me so much when he moves he'll need to have my face hanging on his wall... heh heh!
Sorry I wasn't posting last week while on spring break. Unfortunately I was so busy with all the stuff I had put off until spring break, I didn't have much time for drawing. Right now I'm working on some bigger projects that might take a little while, so I thought you might be interested in some of the preliminary steps. These are some sketches for a painting I'll be working on over the next few days. These were done with a brush and acrylic, no pencils.
It's a poster for Burningman 2004 (totally unauthorized of course). I decided to use watercolor for the fire and I'm totally stoked with the results. Watercolors have a way of just glowing and the way they blend together really lend themselves to organic shapes like fire. The black background is gouache I got a good smoky feel. I use acrylic for the blue and yellow shapes at the top and bottom. I wanted really bright and opaque colors (the blue looks a little uneven on screen, but much more solid in person). I had a little trouble with the lettering at the top. it's hard to make such thin lines with a brush. I decided to use a sharpie pen for the lower text just to make it easier on myself. I can't wait to go to Burningman this year!
Well here I am...This is a self-portrait done in my own "style". I had a lot of fun with this painting. I'm really learning a lot with each project. I started this one by painting the entire canvas with iron oxide yellow and framed out the basic shaped in shades of red. I painted the entire thing using only my pallet knife. It really freed me up and kept me from getting too caught up in the details. In the end I added the final details to the face with a small brush.
This started as a regular nude study but part way through the drawing we had to switch seats with the person to our right and start working on their drawing. We kept switching places several times. This is the result of several of my classmates adding their own touch to my original drawing.
