SPAM SP@M $P@M $+P+@+M...

(Illustrator)

Another illustration for an article provided by my instructor. The article is about the tricks spammers have found to get around spam filters. My concept was to show someone trying to bail out a sinking boat floating in a can of Spam. I think the concept was ok but the image could have been done better. (That is pretty much what my instructor said during the in class critique as well...) I need more practice with Illustrator. I feel like I spend so much time fighting with the program that it's hard to make a good image.

Still life

(pencil on illustration board)

This is a still life I set up on my desk for a class assignment. It consists of a hat my roommate gave to me and a little sculpture my Mom gave me when I was a kid. Oh and a single light source... the lamp.

I love life drawing!

(colored medium on newsprint)

This was a 30 minute sketch with a model. While we were drawing the instructor called out items that weren't actually in the room, and we were supposed to add them to the page. (A musical instrument, an animal, etc.) All I could bring myself to add was the guitar... I was really happy with the way it was coming out and I was afraid to alter my original composition. Now that I've stepped away from it I guess it's not as perfect as I thought while I was making it... but it is one of the better portraits I've done.

Assignment 1 !!!... again... for a different class...

(pen & ink)

This was the first assignment for my illustration Tools class. We had to come up with an illustration for an article with the headline "WOMAN IN SUICIDE KILLS 4 ISRAELIS". (click here to see the section of the article we were given) The class critique went OK... I caught a little flack because I didn't realize that I was supposed to create the image on the computer... which makes sense when I think about it, cuz... well it is a computer class... other than that my instructor said the concept was good but the illustration needed work. I tend to agree... its not my best. Fortunately I can re-do it for a better grade... plus I’ll know to use the computer this time.

Assignment 1 !!!

(water color, pen & ink)

Yeay! I've completed my first Illustration assignment! We had to choose a lyric or song and create an CD cover for it. I chose "Burn Up" by Siouxsie and the Banshees. I always thought the character in this song would make a great comic book villain. I wanted to capture the energy of the song in the illustration. Here are the lyrics for any of you who haven't heard it.

Burn-up
A crumpled future in your fist
The killing streak ascends sun kissed
And the firestarter from within
Pokes out from fever blistered grin

King Salamander that's his name
A desert maker that's his aim
The benign cremator, branding iron in his hand
Eager and willing to torch the land

All fire and brimstone
This jack-o-lantern
He likes to watch the buildings burn

His ardor smolders, phosphorous flies
He radiates with urgence to hypnotize
Stoke the furnace, feed his need
This thirst for fire is all he seeks
He's the blazing rubber making tracks
The blue touch paper at your back

All fire and brimstone
This salamander king
He basks while all around him burns

`Giddy-up, burn-up, not fade away'
These words ignite and pave his way
`Giddy-up, burn-up, stoke it up and turn it up'
He sings these words in fervid frame

All fire and brimstone
This jack-o-lantern
He likes to watch the pyres burn

Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack jump over the candlestick

I haven't forgotten about you.

Hi kids.

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. School has started and as soon as I get my schedule and apartment in order I'll be posting more images. Things are a little up in the air right now cuz my computer is dead and I don't have access to a scanner at work any more. (Having quit my job and all...) Hopefully I'll have a system for getting my work online worked out by next week so... thanks for your patience in the mean time.

Cheers,

Paris
