Liberal ... or .... Conservative

I had a chance to visit an old friend this during my Thanksgiving Holiday. He's the kind of friend that everyone should have. Someone whose view of the world is so opposite from yours that it really makes you think about your beliefs.
He is a born capitalist. He started his own ISP company at age 16 and it is still going strong. His company now supports his entire family. I've often been envious of his success. How can you not envy a guy who converted the master bedroom of his mom's house into his own private movie theater? He has always been very technical, business minded... efficient, but I can't help but worry about his soul...
I don't mean "soul" in the religious "eternal" sense... I mean "Soul" in the James Brown sense. I'm talking about style! I'm talking about passion! I'm an artist. When I was 17 I traveled in Europe and I saw the poorest of the poor, children of beggars, right only steps away from the grandest most opulent cathedrals and palaces. In college I purposefully put myself in an African American Studies class to try and get an idea of an ethnic minority's experience in this country.
I never would have made it through high school if he weren't there to type out my papers for me. I might not have bothered to learn anything about computers without his influence. But when we were at the dinner table and he was talking about how great the Bush tax cuts were and how his brother's school was producing communists by teaching social awareness, I just wanted to shake him and say, "Don't you realize he is running up record breaking deficits, while increasing spending, with little or no benefit to the middle and lower classes, and creating a general feeling of distrust toward the U.S. government both in here and abroad. Meanwhile, pushing legislation that infringes on our personal rights while refusing to disclose information about the questionable activities within his own administration, all under the guise of national security!?"
But I didn't, because... well... I was afraid he might have numbers and facts to back up his argument while all I really had was a general opinion I formed by listening to NPR 6 or 7 hours a day. Besides it was really nice to see him and his family after all these years. I really do love the guy. I just hope that having me as a friend has caused him examine his beliefs every now and then... Even if my political cartoons can't convince him to become a socialist.
