The times they are a changing. Jen and I took a road trip to the gold country last week. (Part of the reason why I haven't posted recently... the other reason is I have been spending my lunches working on school preparations). We visited a historic gold mining town, Yosemite and Beautiful vineyards in Murphys.
It was a little weird for me because I grew up in the sierra foothills, but we had a great time. After four days we had had enough "country" and were ready to get back to the bay area. On the way home we made a pit stop in Oakdale The cowboy capital of the world.
Sitting there outside the local Starbucks (man they really are everywhere!) was a real good ol' boy in dusty shirt and jeans with a big handlebar mustache sipping on a Grande Latte. Somehow the ironic scene of this rough-neck, land working, bronco bustin' cowboy enjoying a corporate-produced gourmet coffee beverage was the perfect end for our wild west adventure.
The Meeting My company had its annual meeting yesterday. I went for the free food, rather than the hours and hours of budget discussions. After a beer and a half at the lunch barbecue I was fading fast... I decided to make a one of those documentary drawings like the have on the news when camera's aren't allowed... well ... at least it kept me awake.
Forbidden. I have a friend and a family member who have both gone through pretty serious break ups recently. It got me thinking about how we compromise ourselves when we want someone to love us. Looking back it always seems so obvious how bad our decisions were... but it can feel so good to make someone else happy. Maybe that moment is Eden... maybe it's easier to leave the fruit on the tree... maybe Eve wasn't trying to tempt Adam but just wanted to give him something nice... and maybe Adam just wanted to make Eve happy by accepting her gift... maybe they thought the tree of knowledge could finally help them know what the other really wanted... you know without all that uncomfortable having to ask stuff....
I could drag this metaphor out more, but it is late and I'm getting a little woozy... anyway... I've also been watching a lot of Japanese animation... so the color and style of this drawing is somewhat inspired by anime.
